Use of the Diode laser effectively resulted in improvement in pigmentation and wrinkles while maintaining a high safety profile with limited down time.

A noninvasive pulsed Diode laser administered for 3 to 5 sessions over a 3-month period results in objective reductions in the appearance of wrinkles and pigmentation, study data published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology report.

Deidentified patient data were retrospectively assessed in this study, with a focus on treatment outcomes following Diode laser therapy for pigmentation and wrinkles. Patients treated January 2017 through April 2018 were included in the analysis. For pigmentation, patients were treated with nominal wavelengths of 805 nm. Wrinkles were targeted at nominal wavelengths of 1060 nm. The laser systems (LightSheer) featured a contact cooling handpiece to reduce pain as well as epidermal damage. Primary outcomes included improvements in pigmentation and wrinkles, adverse events, treatment satisfaction, and patient tolerability to therapy.

The cohort included 44 patients aged 30 to 60 years with Fitzpatrick skin types II to IV. A total of 8 patients underwent treatment for pigmentation, whereas 36 were treated for wrinkles. Treatments for both wrinkles and pigmentation were associated with tolerable pain levels. Blinded investigators determined there was significant clearance of pigmentation after a median of 4 treatments (2.50 ± 0.15; P <.05). There was also significant and objectively determined improvements in wrinkles in 13 individuals (0.46 ± 0.12; P =.005). Treatment satisfaction was high for both treatments.

Limitations of the study were the small sample size, lack of a randomized design and control group, and its retrospective nature.

The study investigators suggest that additional “evaluations need to be conducted to determine an effective method to measure improvement in pigmentation and fine wrinkles.”
